On the morning of 24 June 217 B.C. not far from Tuoro at Trasimeno, Hannibal Barca made a surprise attack on the Roman troops led by cunsul Caio Flaminio. squeezing them in a mortal grip. Obliged to fight in short order, the Romans did not have time to organize an effective defense and were quickly overcome by the Carthaginian army whose commander used very clever tactics. It was truly a massacre. Fifteen thousand Roman soldiers were killed and Caio Flaminio as well lost his life after great resistance.
The Battle of Trasimeno, the first Roman defeat is commemorated in a theatrical event that recreates the atmosphere of war in any age.
